Frédéric(Fred) Atlan Exhibition

9 mon. November 2015 - 6 sun. December 2015

-----------------------------------------------------------------

GALLERY IND. is pleased to present the exhibition of Frédéric Atlan, his first solo show in Japan. Born in Toulon in 1966, he studied at the University of Paris 8 before embarking on a career as a professional photographer, and now he works in Paris. This exhibition shows 10 pieces from "Nulle part", his recent photography series.

 ARTIST STATEMENT

- about the background

"I discovered photography after graduating from high school when I became a photographer's assistant. I then studied visual arts for three years at the University of Paris 8.

After my studies, I seized an opportunity to travel to Melanesia (Vanuatu, Salomon and New Caledonia) and teach photography for five years. At the end of this period, I decided to return to Paris and work as a professional photographer while continuing my research related to the photographic medium."

- about the work and ideas

"I have always been an actor in my photographs. Like an intruder in the landscape, I stand before the camera; I am the one who triggers the event; almost ritualistically, it is I who obscures, disturbs, transforms the landscape. In "Nulle part"(Nowhere), a series of 12 photographs, the photographic field becomes an experimental space in which my action precedes the shutter release.

Equipped with tissue paper, I irreverently create landscapes. Materials, vapours, transparencies, and flat areas seem to arise from nowhere. My pictures reveal the unknown that haunts us, that feeling of infinity that never ceases to question us. Inspired by the Romance artists, I want to reconcile the mundane and the beautiful."

Kaori Yoshikawa Exhibition "ECSTASY IS SOLITUDE"

3 sat. October 2015 - 3 tue. November 2015

----------------------------------------------------------------------

GALLERY IND. is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by Kaori Yoshikawa. Born in Hyogo, Japan in 1982, she moved to the UK with her family the next year and was raised there. Later, she studied at Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London before embarking on a career that would encompass deep explorations of a wide range of mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, assemblage, performance, music and poetry.

"Ecstasy is Solitude" is an unpredictable exhibition of untimely poetry in various forms from the artist.

 ARTIST STATEMENT

 MY 200 - 400 WORDS

A request was made for this statement to be at least 200 words, no more than 400 and though I have an aversion to writing for the sake of writing, or talking for the sake of talking, this process if used with intention can be useful as we discover in redundant talk that there was something that wanted to be said. A something that couldn't breathe that now exposes itself.

I patiently nod my head to the beat of the word count, knowing that only I can bring about the total. Hot teas remain hot in hot weather, and cold beers remain cold in the cold.

One last thing before I go: We must stop telling each other things.

We find out something and our first instinct is to tell someone - to share in it, to relive it. But we understand that we will never be able to convey it in the way that we had it conveyed to us.

Now for the last 26 words.

The inability to go back in time does not make us human.

The inability to go back in time without losing our memory makes us human.

MAME’s FACTORY 個展

"scrapes on veneer"

GALLERY IND.

GALLERY IND. is pleased to announce the woodwork exhibition by Takahiro Inoue under the name of MAME's FACTORY. The artist is quite familiar with craftworking materials, especially with wood ones as he has grown up and has been working in carpentary surroundings.

In this exhibition we will present some pieces of plywood boards of veneer, on the surfaces of which he scrapes slightly by using the techniques of sandblasting.

We hope you will see the brand-new landscapes come up there and will enjoy both the visual and tactile experience by seeing and touching his works which come from an artisanry and artistic background.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I'm preparing some pieces of wood materials for this exhibition, mainly using the thinly sliced plywood boards of veneer which are usually produced for furniture use. By scraping some part of the smooth surface of the board,  I'm working on this project as if to scratch up a kind of landscapes.

Also, the word "veneer" has another meaning of "fake", "imitation" or "pretense", because it has frequently been used to cover something original. So, it is the word which necessarily includes the question of what the original is, what the essence is.

You may feel the concavo-convex surfaces of my works at first glance, but will later realize that there is no such a distinct difference between the original areas and the scraped ones on the surfaces, and that they are almost even and flat, for the scrapes on them are so slight that there in fact exists just a small distance between these two different parts.

You can enjoy all my works by touching them, and  I hope you will feel such a small difference and will also come to look below the surface.

Guillermo De Angelis
13 mon. July - 8 sat. August, 2015

GALLERY IND.

GALLERY IND. is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by an Argentina fine art photographer, Guillermo De Angelis. He was born in Rosario, Argentina and lived nearly 10 years in Madrid, Spain. After having studied architecture, philosophy and design, he is currently a photographer, he says, due to destiny or karma. De Angelis has ever presented all of his photographic works in square format. This square format, in which the shape and the relations among the elements of the composition get a special prominence, highlights serenity in harmony with his pictures. In his quiet pictures, and also in the titles of the works on which he puts much importance, we can find a certain kind of insinuations or implications sent out, transmitted to us by the gesture rather than by the signal, by whispering rather than by shouting. We are preparing an overview exhibition of his black-and-white photographs. We hope you would feel a stunning silence and peace in and around his work.

ARTIST STATEMENT
"After doing architecture, design and philosophy I dove into photography. With the sort of enthusiasm that drives you to move forward, or better still, inwards. Hoping to discover within, rather than outside myself, what I am trying to show. I choose to take pictures not prepared. I try to get the expression through the economy of resources. Focusing on the details that  strike me as essential. Suggesting clearly, presenting without describing."

Whereabouts of Water"

MIYATA Yukino : "Whereabouts of Water"

8 mon.June - 5 sun.July, 2015

GALLERY IND. is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by MIYATA Yukino (b.1986). Miyata has so far created and presented her copperplate engraving works, mostly by using the technique of drypoint etching, which is one of the copperplate printmaking skills. But this time she will present the original watercolors of her prints for the first time in her career. Most of them will be the ones from "Taste of Water" exhibition, which was held in Kyoto in May this year. We hope you would enjoy her first attempt to show the raw images of her lush pieces laid by.

"There are some streams flowing and some water standing still in some places or other I have never been. I feel as if I was chasing water, when I could sense the color, scent, and feel of it by taste buds on the surface of my tongue, getting a line on the whereabouts of the water."

Surfaces, as tactile"

YOSHIKI Marie : "Surfaces, as tactile"

4 mon. - 31 sun. May, 2015

GALLERY IND.

GALLERY IND. is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by a silkscreen artist, Marie Yoshiki (b.1982) - Surfaces, as tactile. Tactile, a word seen in the title, is the one used in connection with our sense of touch. The artist uses this word, thinking of her art works as something that would make an appeal to our tactile sensation. In order to make her pieces take on the surfaces of the real objects, she generally uses more than 10 silkscreens, and prints over 100 times for each of them. As a result, the ink layers piled on the supports assume the features of the real things. Based on the detailed study of motifs and the refined skill of silkscreen printmaking, she has ever continued creating such technically sophisticated productions. We hope you would enjoy fully the tactile feelings of Yoshiki's artwork.

ARTIST STATEMENT

There are more and more images circulating on the Internet and getting into our eyes today, from which we get countless items of information. Referring to the details of the objects I see in everyday life and to the reflected light from the surfaces of them as well, I simulate and visualize the textures or the hand feelings of real things. In my recent silkscreen works, I've deposited layer upon layer of ink on the supports of panels, and for this exhibition I'm making an attempt to materialize objects, especially the textures inherent in them and the tactile feel of them.

DOUTOU Yuka : "good...." : 6 mon.  April - 3 sun. May, 2015

GALLERY IND. is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by a silkscreen artist, Yuka Doutou (b.1983).The title of this exhibition 'good....' represents the artist's attitude toward creation against a restlessness in the air surrounding the world today, her effort to continue to produce even under such unfavorable circumstances. In her artworks, most of the motifs are highly characterized, and some of them are tightly packed, so that we can hardly distinguish clearly what is depicted on the surface while seeing them in a distance. On the other hand, when we examine them up close, unexpected images such as cats, butterflies, or riceballs appear before us, and also the multiple combinations of them give us a feeling of humor, funniness, loveliness, or sometimes even a little eeriness. According to the circumstances we feel them, they seem to take on a quite different look. We hope you would enjoy them both at close range and in a distance, searching for the best position to see them.

桐月沙樹 個展  ''outside of the square''

KIRIZUKI Saki : ''outside of the square''
2 mon. - 29 sun. March, 2015

- 桐月沙樹個展 "outside of the square" -

GALLERY IND. is delighted to announce the solo exhibition by KIRIZUKI Saki (b.1985). After studying and mastering the theories and techniques of printmaking, she has so far presented her woodcut prints almost exclusively in  square format. Square, a shape with four straight equal sides and 90° angles at the corners, has frequently been used as a symbol for stability, firmness, or truth. She also has preferred a square form, but for this show, she is trying to get out of the square frame, working further on other forms such as three dimensional products of paper, porcelain, combined printing blocks etc.

We hoped you would enjoy her attempt to present subsidiary pieces in the course of creation and a little more experimental works than ever before outside the square.

Also, this show will be followed in succession by each of the other members of 'hiyomi circle', a calendar-producing group of four - KIRIZUKI Saki, DOUTOU Yuka, MIYATA Yukino, YOSHIKI Marie, all from Kyoto City University of Arts.
